In Japan, Sumitomo Metals is the sole supplier of railway wheels and axles, and is one of the leading manufacturers of railway driving gear units, bogie trucks and couplers. By utilizing the high technology we have nurtured in Japan, we are able to supply high-end railway wheels and axles exhibiting high quality, advanced function and reliability.
In August 2011 we acquired Standard Steel, LLC, one of North America's leading manufacturers of railway wheels and axles. We now have a supply structure operating out of two bases, Japan and the U.S. In pursuing this transaction, we were determined to become a truly global manufacturer of railway wheels and axles, with particular strength in the high grade, high-speed segment. We will continue to contribute to the global development of railways.
